TABLE FOR TWO: Fictions, by Amor TowlesFew literary stylists not named Ann Patchett attain best-sellerdom, but Amor Towles makes the cut. His three lauded novels — “Rules of Civility,” “A Gentleman in Moscow” and “The Lincoln Highway” — hung around on lists for months, if not years. The book spans the 20th century, bringing characters from a range of backgrounds into tableaus of deceit and desire. Towles devotes the first section to New York, its wealthy and famous shuffling against strivers and innocents in La Guardia terminals, musty bookstores or immigrant communities. In “The Line,” a naïve Communist builds a lucrative business that steers him to Manhattan, where con games lurk on every corner.

Investors aren't anticipating healthcare funding to surge to anything resembling 2021 levels this year, and fewer deals could mean shutdowns for many companies running low on cash. Multiple healthcare startups have announced raises this year at Series B and beyond. Investors said there's now a higher bar for which startups get venture funding compared to 2021, however. Exits and shutdowns aheadWhile a number of biotech startups have jumped into the public markets already this year, the IPO window for healthcare startups has remained firmly shut. Still, many investors are optimistic that a few healthcare startups will test the waters later this year.

Last fall I found myself at a dinner party that included a former Biden administration official and a Democratic donor, and the conversation turned, naturally, to President Biden’s age and his prospects for re-election. The gulf in their perceptions, I think, speaks to the fact that Biden’s age has impaired his ability to campaign much more than his ability to govern, which has created an impossible dilemma for the Democratic Party. I’m not aware of any leaks from the White House suggesting that Biden is confused, exhausted or forgetful when setting priorities or making decisions. His words brought to the surface deep, terrifying doubts about Biden’s ability to do the one part of his job that matters above all others, which is beating Donald Trump. Since Hur decided not to charge Biden with any crimes, his comments about Biden’s age, particularly his claim that Biden couldn’t remember the year his son Beau died, seemed designed to shiv him politically.

Storms, floods, fires and other extreme weather events led to more than 43 million displacements involving children between 2016 and 2021, according to a United Nations report. But while catastrophes intensify, the world has yet to recognize climate migrants and find formal ways of protecting them. Nearly a third, or 43 million of the 134 million times that people were uprooted from their homes due to extreme weather from 2016-21 included children. Floods displaced children more than 19 million times in places like India and China. Many are enduring “overlapping crises” — where risks from climate extremes are compounded by conflict, fragile institutions and poverty, Healy said.

July 4 (Reuters) - Former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar has been appointed chairman of India's selection committee, the country's cricket board (BCCI) said on Tuesday. The senior selection committee, led by Chetan Sharma, had initially been sacked in November after India were knocked out of the Twenty20 World Cup in the semi-finals in Australia. Agarkar was recently a coach with Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals but parted ways after this year's tournament. "The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) ... interviewed applicants for the position of one selector in the Men's Selection Committee," the BCCI said in a statement. The 45-year-old played 26 tests for India, 191 one-day internationals and four T20 matches, taking a total of 349 wickets across all formats.

CNN —After playing Shiv Roy in “Succession,” the critically acclaimed TV series that satirically portrayed the uber-rich but morally bankrupt Roy family grappling for control of a media empire, Sarah Snook will star in another production that skewers society. Opinion | Put ‘Succession’ in the TV Pantheon
  + stars: | 2023-06-02 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +5 min
Then, too, the show’s judgment on elites can be read in two distinct ways, one more left-wing and one more right-wing. This consciousness came with varying levels of self-delusion, and none of these shows fully forgave their protagonists in the end. But the possibility of redemption existed for them at least notionally, and I think that’s why “Succession” seems like such an outlier among its peers. I think this critique is partially fair, and that, along with the strengths I described above, there is a savage superficiality to some of the characterizations in “Succession” that’s beneath the psychological level achieved on other famous TV dramas. When it comes to the desire for redemption and honesty and love, though, I’m not sure “Succession” is as barren as Phillips seems to suggest.

But the benefits of those bargains were always contingent on women’s relationships to men, Kandiyoti wrote. (Now for the required warning: “Succession” spoilers appear below.) One way to view the events of “Succession” is as the story of Kendall’s tragic misapprehension of his position in the family under his father’s patriarchy. He thought that as a son — the “eldest boy,” as he yowled angrily (and incorrectly) in the final episode — he was set to inherit everything. But actually, in patriarchal terms of power and position though not actual gender, he was effectively as vulnerable as a wife or daughter trapped in Logan’s orbit.

Ultimately, none succeeded, as the company was sold to Lukas Matsson, a Swedish tech billionaire. But the perennial question of who would take the throne introduced a friendly, low-stakes competition to the viewing experience. Katie Way, a journalist in Brooklyn, did not watch the first three seasons of “Succession,” but she still put her name (and $20) into a bracket pool with nine other people. “I guess I’m a little contrarian.”By the end of the episode, Ms. Way and the other contestant had each claimed their $100. When asked what she would spend her winnings on, she said, “I probably spent more money buying wine bottles for the watch parties, so I’ll probably spend it on more food for future watch parties.”
